In short

Chinese New Year 2027 falls on Saturday 6 February, and the Lantern Festival on Saturday 20 February. International logistics operators report that production slows 3–4 weeks before the holiday, factories close for about 2–3 weeks, and full capacity returns 4–6 weeks after it starts. That is why it pays to finalise orders by late November or early December 2026.

New Year's EveFriday 5 February 2027
Chinese New Year (Year of the Goat)Saturday 6 February 2027
Lantern Festival, the traditional end of the celebrationsSaturday 20 February 2027

Dates from the Hong Kong Observatory calendar.

The official holiday in mainland China has not been announced yet. The State Council publishes each year's schedule in the autumn: the 2026 one came out on 4 November 2025. Since 2025 the Spring Festival has four statutory days, New Year's Eve plus the first three days of the year (State Council Decree 795), but the actual days off and the make-up working weekends are set by the yearly notice. For reference, in 2026 the holiday ran from 15 to 23 February, with make-up working days on Saturday 14 and Saturday 28 February (State Council notice).

What happens to factories before and after the holiday?

These are observations reported by international logistics operators, not official data, and they vary by factory and region.

PhaseWhat usually happens
3–4 weeks beforeProduction slows down as factories rush to close open orders
Mid-December to JanuarySea and air freight rates rise and carriers are overbooked
The holidayFactories close, often for 2–3 weeks; some stay closed or at reduced capacity for 4 weeks or more
After the holidayThe full workforce returns 4–6 weeks after the holiday starts, and some workers don't go back to the same employer
RestartOne or two weeks or more of shipping backlog; freight rates come down 1–3 weeks later

Staff turnover after the holiday is also why quality can drop on the first production runs: those batches deserve a stricter check.

How should an online store plan for Chinese New Year 2027?

  1. Close your orders early. Logistics operators advise finalising orders by late November or early December 2026.
  2. Stock your bestsellers for the closure and for the slow restart after it, not just for the holiday weeks.
  3. Book shipping early: indicatively sea freight 3–5 weeks and air freight 2–3 weeks before the holiday.
  4. Avoid new product launches from the first post-holiday production runs, or plan a stricter quality check on them.
  5. Warn your customers about longer delivery times if you ship in dropshipping during the holiday period.

If you sell in dropshipping, one option is to move your bestsellers to a warehouse closer to your customers before the closure, so orders keep shipping while factories are stopped.
